The City of Auburn Hills, a dynamic community committed to innovation and growth, announces its first annual employee book drive, in conjunction with the Auburn Hills Noon Optimist Club, to benefit Will Rogers Elementary School in Pontiac.  City employees who donate a new or gently used book will be allowed to wear jeans to work on Friday as a result of their donation.

Karrie Waarala, Library Director of the Auburn Hills Public Library and a member of the Noon Optimist Club, says the book drive will help promote March as National Reading Month.

"We are collecting books in February so the Noon Optimist Club members can help launch National Reading Month in March when the books are delivered to the Will Rogers Elementary School students," explains Ms. Waarala. "The books are sure to get the kids excited about reading, which is our ultimate goal."

City Manager Pete Auger says the book drive comes on the tail of the employees' Jeans in January program, where employees were able to wear jeans on Friday if they contributed a piece of children's outerwear to the City's community cold weather clothing drive.

"We joke that our employees are eager to find another reason to wear jeans on Friday," says Mr. Auger. "Actually, the Noon Optimist Club is one of two Optimist Clubs in Auburn Hills and a reflection of the strong civic involvement of the business community, our residents and employees. In addition to Karrie Waarala, we have several other employees who are members of the morning or noon clubs and Brian Marzolf, the City's Recreation Director, serves as President of the Noon Optimist Club."

Donations of new and gently used books will be accepted on Fridays from 8am to 5pm throughout the month of February at the Auburn Hills Community Center, located at 1827 N. Squirrel Road. Books should be aimed at kindergarten through 6th grade reading levels.
