Last week Ford president of The Americas Mark Fields addressed the Chamber's Board of Directors, discussing the key principles of Ford's turnaround and its commitment to doing business in Michigan. Fields acknowledged CEO Alan Mulally's leadership in reinventing all aspects of the business, and indicated the company's current success is attributed to "having the discipline to stick to the plan and attack goals with laser-like purpose."
At a time when many businesses in the region are evaluating operations, Ford's story of making tough decisions to downsize brands, operations and staff - including the recent announcement to eliminate the 70-year-old Mercury brand - is very relevant.

Fields indicated quality, safety, smart technology and fuel efficiency are its key focus areas. Ford's electric vehicle plan will invest $450 million in Michigan's economy and create 1,000 jobs.

Fields also shared four opportunities for the business community to join together to change Michigan's economy. He spoke of the need for improved infrastructure, announcing support of the Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) project, and applauded the Chamber's leadership role in advocating for DRIC.
Fields also requested support for the manufacturing industry in Michigan, reminding the group that it is the backbone of our nation and it creates good paying jobs.
Fields called for the reduction or elimination of Michigan's Personal Property Tax, indicating it places Michigan competitive disadvantage in attracting new business investment. Fields also said Ford welcomes all businesses to bring new innovative ideas to the company because new great ideas will help achieve economic transformation and renew pride in the Motor City.
Fields closed by telling the group that Ford is committed and wants the business community's help restoring the nation's pride in the North American Automotive Industry.
