At least 38 businesses made a combined commitment to invest $74.7 million and add 680 new jobs to Macomb County in 2009, according to data released Wednesday by the county Planning and Economic Development Department.

The 2009 economic impact report, furnished by the department to the county commission's Planning and Economic Development Committee on Wednesday, includes at least 250 new jobs from companies with incentives approved by the Michigan Economic Growth Authority, and 15 companies that became part of state-designated Tool and Die Recovery Zones.

Exclusive of the zones, which waive certain taxes to help small tool and die shops stay in business, a total of 23 businesses invested $73.6 million in Macomb to add 678 jobs and retain 934 existing jobs.

The attraction and expansion deals range widely in scale, from aerospace industry supplier Global Tooling Systems Inc. investing $17.2 million to relocate from Utica to larger space in Macomb Township, adding up to 184 jobs, down to Achatz Handmade Pie Co., to invest $300,000 and retain five jobs at an Armada Township location.

Macomb County Planning and Economic Development Director Stephen Cassin said the year-end report was completed Wednesday for the committee, which will submit it in turn to the full county board for review.

He has said previously his department is targeting five key growth sectors in its "Imagine Macomb" Targeted Industries Initiative aimed at business development: aerospace, medical devices, defense and homeland security, alternative energy and advanced manufacturing.

Those growth industries accounted for 24 of the 38 business attraction or expansion deals, and more than 560 of the new jobs. All other 2009 business deals either were automotive or were not classified by a specific industry.

Other economic development deals in the report include:

• Dynamic Control Inc., makers of material handling systems for the defense industry, to invest $14 million and 100 new jobs in Chesterfield Township.

• ProWeld Inc., makers of in-plant and returnable shipping containers, which relocated in December from the Port Huron Industrial Park into a former Lionel Trains building in Chesterfield Township, for an investment of $2.3 million and 100 new county jobs.

• Models & Tools Inc., investing $3.1 million to relocate in March from Troy to Shelby Township and add 57 new jobs, with the aid of state tax incentives approved by MEGA. The company now has at least 100 employees, up from about 80-85 before the relocation.

• Visioneering Inc., the Fraser-based tooling and fixtures manufacturer for the aerospace industry, to invest $3.5 million and add up to 50 new jobs. Company CEO Marc Strandquist previously told Crain's the company had grown from 93 to 105 employees during fourth-quarter 2009.

• United Machining Inc• ., makers of automotive specialty tools, to invest $7.3 million and add up to 28 new jobs to its current 58 jobs in an automotive-related expansion in Sterling Heights.

• Gentz Industries L.L.C., suppliers of containment cases that house certain engine components in commercial jet aircraft, investing $2.4 million and adding up to 26 jobs to its current 289 in aerospace-related growth in Warren.

• DM Fabricating Inc., makers of welded components for the automotive and defense industries, investing $2.2 million and adding up to 30 new jobs in Sterling Heights. The company has reported previously it was looking to expand in or near its local headquarters.
